Saudi Arabia initially said Khashoggi left its Istanbul consulate on his own.

Three major European powers Germany, Britain and France pressed Saudi Arabia to provide facts to back up its earlier explanation of a fight, while Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would not export arms to Saudi Arabia while the current uncertainty over Khashoggi's fate persisted.

President Trump said Saudi Arabia's announcement that suspects were in custody marked a "good first step", though some USA lawmakers on both sides of the aisle hav said Saudi Arabia's account isn't credible and seems created to exonerate Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of any involvement despite widespread allegations that he was behind the killing.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the US President Donald Trump have held a phone conversation on slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkey's presidential press office said early Monday, Anadolu reports.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his USA counterpart Donald Trump discussed the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi by phone late Sunday night.

But the U.S. president said that, although sanctions were a possibility, halting an arms deal would "hurt us more than it would hurt them".

After nearly two seeks of silence following the disappearance of Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia last week said Khashoggi was killed during a botched questioning. Another Turkish ruling party official also criticised Saudi Arabia, saying the kingdom should have given its explanation "before the situation reached this point".

Turkish police on Monday found an abandoned auto belonging to the Saudi consulate at an underground vehicle park in Istanbul, three weeks after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom's mission.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin addressed the Khashoggi investigationin a meeting Monday with the Saudi Crown Prince, according to a tweet from Treasury spokesperson Tony Sayegh.

It also said the Spanish government offers their condolences to Khashoggi's family.

Saudi Arabia says it has arrested 18 people, sacked two aides of Mohammed bin Salman and set up a body, under his leadership, to reform the intelligence agency following the incident. Meanwhile, business leaders say they won't attend an upcoming economic summit in the kingdom that's the brainchild of Prince Mohammed.

The President also said that a monthlong investigation into Khashoggi's death, which the Saudis requested on Friday, would be too long.

"Obviously, we have not yet fully understood what really happened", he said, calling the murder of the Middle Eastern journalist and regime critic who lived in the United States "disturbing". "But we have to have a sustainable solution and we need 60 votes to get that done".

Some governments and prominent executives have said they would pull out of a forthcoming investment conference in Saudi Arabia.
