A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked retired apex court Judge Justice A K Patnaik to supervise the inquiry and submit the report in a sealed cover.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for CVC, said that several documents were required to be looked into during the inquiry and 10 days time would not be sufficient.

The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition Friday from Verma against his ouster, ordered that the investigation into his case be completed within two weeks. The top court barred interim director M Nageshwar Rao from taking any policy decisions.

Joining Gandhi in the protest, Gehlot said the decision to remove the CBI director was "illegal" and such a decision can only be taken together by the chief justice of India, the leader of the opposition and the prime minister. The supervision is a "one-time exception felt necessary in the peculiar facts of the case and should not be understood to be casting any reflection on any authority of the government", the court said.

He also states that he had reservations against the appointment of Rakesh Asthana as CBI Special Director in view of the cases pending against him. The CVC has also said that for the time being, no monitoring by anyone else should be allowed.

In the morning, another woman devotee, Leby, was reportedly stopped from entering Pamba at Pathanamthitta town, some 40kms away. While women devotees were stopped from entering the temple, multiple reporters were mobbed and attacked in Nilakkal.

Addressing the gathering of Congress protesters earlier in the day, Gandhi accused Modi of destroying institutions such as the CBI, the Election Commission and the Enforcement Directorate. The bench told Rohatgi that since his petition is not before it, the court would not hear him at this stage.

He also referred to the CVC and Centre's orders divesting Verma of his duties. Asthana, incidentally, has been reported by the media as close to PM Modi, a Gujarat cadre officer who was brought into the CBI and tipped to succeed Alok Verma after his retirement end year.

In a dramatic turn of event, the Delhi Police on Friday withdrew at least two of its PSOs, who had nabbed IB operatives near CBI chief Alok Verma's house, and sent them to unknown location.

It also said that the high-powered committee comprising the Prime Minister, leader of the opposition and Chief Justice of India was not consulted by the Centre before appointing Rao as the interim director. He also cited the Vineet Narain judgment to support Verma's pleas. The BJP leaders said that since Verma and Asthana's allegations against each other were seen as a blow to the agency's reputation, it was only fit for the government to divest the two officers of their powers temporarily.
