  • Asia Bibi was sentenced in 2010

Aasia Bibi, 53, who has been death row for eight years, was acquitted by the country's top court on Wednesday morning. She was subsequently arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. Her legal team fought a tough legal battle ever since.

According to The Guardian, Asia Bibi, a Christian farm labourer with five children, got embroiled in a heated argument with her fellow Muslim workers in 2010 when she took a sip of the drinking water stored for them.

"Such language is used by the enemies of a state", Khan said while addressing the nation in the wake of Asia Bibi's acquittal by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

"[The judges] who have ordered the release of the accused Aasia are all liable to be killed under religious edict", said Qadri at a protest in the eastern city of Lahore.

Bibi's lawyer Saiful Malook told news agency AFP: 'The verdict has shown that the poor, the minorities and the lowest segments of society can get justice in this country despite its shortcomings.

Don't be surprised, though, if you don't see Mrs Bibi celebrating her new-found freedom on the steps of the court.

The pope told Bibi's daughter: "I think often of your mother and I pray for her". "Will they let me out, really?" In retaliation to their refusal to touch the water and amidst their demand for her to convert to Islam, Asia reportedly defended her own religion. "What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind?"

The Muslim women became enraged, and Bibi fled amid shouting and spitting. The police took her into custody, saving her from a fierce mob. She has been imprisoned ever since.

The provincial governor of Punjab, where she lived, made speeches defending her and implicitly questioning the blasphemy laws.

On the eve of judgment, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, chief of the religious political party Tehreek-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP), warned against any decision in favour of Bibi and said that if that happened, the whole country would be brought to a standstill.

Wednesday's ruling sparked numerous protests nearly immediately. In many cities of Punjiab there are demonstrations and roadblocks.

Passengers traveling by bus between Lahore and Islamabad were stuck on the highway as various parts of it were blocked by groups of protesters.

Mr Khan also flayed a video clip of a leader of protestors on social media in which he said that the judges who gave the verdict were liable to murder. Our protest will continue until and unless the Supreme Court reverses its decision and the blasphemer is sentenced to death. Karachi is in the province of Sindh, where officials have imposed a 10-day ban on riding tandem on motorcycles and scooters, gatherings of more than four persons and the carrying of firearms, among other things - with the intentions of deterring protesters and decreasing the potential for violence. If not for the Supreme Court ruling in her favor, she might have been the first woman executed for blasphemy in Pakistan. "Coutts:-Pakistan-Christians-living-witnesses-of-faith-and-salvation-for-all-45076.html" target="_blank">spoke with AsiaNews about how hard it would be to change Pakistan's blasphemy laws. We are grateful to the judges for giving us justice.
