Jamal Khashoggi was unsafe Islamist: Saudi Crown Prince Salman

  • Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist

Amnesty International campaigners on Friday renamed the road outside the Saudi Arabian embassy in London as "Khashoggi Street" to mark the one-month anniversary of the dissident journalist's murder in Turkey.

"Even though a month has passed since Jamal's murder, his body has still not been given to his loved ones", Cengiz said during a Washington memorial service for her would-be husband.

"I really don't know how to express myself", she said.

Erdogan stressed that in light of this, there was "no reason to believe that his murder reflected Saudi Arabia's official policy", so "it would be wrong to view the Khashoggi slaying as a "problem" between two countries".

Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it.

The CHP leader was referring to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi Consulate General to Istanbul, who left Turkey a few days after the disappearance of the journalist.

Israel and Egypt have called on the White House to continue supporting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman despite the murder of Jamal Khashoggi by a hit squad sent from Riyadh, the Washington Post reports.

Ms Cengiz made an impassioned plea for answers in a "Post" column, noting that Istanbul's top prosecutor had already accused Saudi agents of strangling Mr Khashoggi and dismembering and destroying his body. He denounced what he called "the demonization of Saudi Arabia".

The journalist's death and Saudi Arabia's inconsistent public statements regarding its responsibility have shocked the world.

"We knew that Khashoggi's body was dismembered", United Kingdom daily The Independent quoted Aktay as saying.

"We therefore respectfully call on you to immediately authorise an independent, global investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi that would lay the groundwork for identifying and holding accountable the perpetrators of this grievous crime".

Saudi authorities later backtracked again and said his death was premeditated.

"As responsible members of the worldwide community, we must reveal the identities of the puppet masters behind Khashoggi's killing and discover those in whom Saudi officials - still trying to cover up the murder - have placed their trust", he said.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is among the wealthiest, most powerful, and most important nations in the Middle East, in all of history", the evangelical group's spokesman Johnnie Moore said.

The crown prince also reportedly urged President Trump's advisers Jared Kushner and John Bolton in the call to preserve the alliance between the US and Saudi Arabia.

The murder has strained the decades-old alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia, with Trump calling it "one of the worst cover-ups in history".

Trump has condemned Khashoggi's killing in strong terms but has also defended US arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which is the biggest foreign customer for American weaponry.
