Death toll rises in California wildfire, matching deadliest

A devastating blaze in northern California has become the deadliestwildfire in the history of the state, with 42 people killed, Sheriff Kory Honea said on Monday.
Meanwhile in Northern California, teams searching the charred ruins of the town of Paradise found five bodies at a home and one in a vehicle, raising the death toll to 29 and making it the deadliest wildfire on record in California history.
The fire has now surpassed the 1933 Griffith Park disaster that killed 31.
Some bodies were found in gutted cars that were overrun by the fast-moving fire, as residents scrambled to evacuate overnight.
The devastation was so complete in some neighbourhoods that, "It's very hard to determine whether or not there may be human remains there", Mr Honea said. Authorities said they have reports of 110 people still missing in the area affected by the blaze. The dead were so badly burned that authorities brought in a mobile DNA lab and consulted forensic anthropologists for help in identifying them.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Woolsey fire has caused at least two confirmed deaths and has forced more than 250,000 people to evacuate their homes.
