"(The) announcement marks tangible progress in America's return to the Moon's surface to stay", Bridenstine said.

Commercial maintenance program lunar payloads (also known as CLPS) based on the space policy Directive 1, signed by President Donald trump in December of a year ago.

NASA will evaluate bids based on technical feasibility, price, and schedule, among other things when considering contract awards. It highlights the innumerable government-led space boondoggles, how companies could profit from extraterrestrial travel and the timing of playing the guitar in space and golf on the moon.

Apart from building a human colony on Mars, scientists are also planning to build up a colony on the moon, and as per Russian scientists they will make it happen within 20 years.

If you've been paying attention to the NASA news, you'll have noticed that the last week has been pretty busy for the company. "Each are entrepreneurial pioneers of commercial space bringing key capabilities to the table, and we look forward to working with them in offering robotic expeditions to the Moon for science, commerce and exploration". The earliest these companies could fly their wares with NASA is 2019. Working with US companies is the next step to achieving long-term scientific study and human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

One of the nine companies will be tasked with delivering science and technology payloads to the surface of the Moon for NASA. Zurbuchen said the agency has a "set of instruments" that are either ready for flight now or could be ready in the near future, such as a retroreflector to enable accurate laser ranging of the Earth-moon distance.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA administrator, said NASA will buy the service and let private industry work out the details on getting to the moon.

SpaceX and Boeing are developing spaceships with NASA that will carry USA astronauts into space for the first time since the last space shuttle flight in 2011.

And of course, the moon's surface will be a kind of test site for human missions to Mars, much like the space station has established information about long-term human spaceflight.

"We are excited to partner with these awesome companies at the dawn of a new era of lunar and solar system exploration", stated Moon Express founder & CEO, Bob Richards. NASA, in 2014, gave both SpaceX and Boeing combined $6.8 billion to develop launch systems that could transport the agency's astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
