Lawyers say ex-Trump lawyer Cohen deserves no prison

  • Donald Trump Jr. talked with Senate investigators about his family's real estate dealings in September of 2017. The Judiciary Committee released his testimony earlier this year

However, the lawyers admit, Cohen remained in contact with Russian Federation months after the campaign claimed it cut off communications, even making moves for Trump to travel to Russian Federation that summer. He pleaded guilty August 21 in an investigation in NY to tax evasion and making illegal campaign contributions.

"Michael's decision to cooperate and take full responsibility for his own conduct well reflects his personal resolve, notwithstanding past errors, to re-point his internal compass true north toward a productive, ethical and thoroughly law abiding life", Cohen's lawyers wrote in the memorandum, noting that he'd "participated in seven voluntary interviews with the Special Counsel's Office" so far.

Cohen has been cooperating with Robert Mueller's investigation into the ties between Trump and Russian Federation, and his lawyers argued that his cooperation should earn him a sentence of "time-served" as opposed to the potential sentence of five years and three months recommended by federal sentencing guidelines.

But Cohen declined to enter into a traditional agreement because he wanted to avoid a delay in his sentencing "as investigations and trials unfold and conclude", his lawyers wrote Friday.

Cohen pleaded guilty in the special counsel's investigation Thursday to one charge of lying to Congress about the extent of his work to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Cohen's lawyers wrote that he kept Trump "apprised of these communications", and he and Trump "discussed possible travel to Russian Federation in the summer of 2016, and Michael took steps to clear dates for such travel".

"Michael regrets that his vigor in promoting Client-1's interests in the heat of political battle led him to abandon good judgment and cross legal lines", they added.

President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen said Friday he was in "close and regular contact" with Trump's White House staff and legal team when he prepared a statement for Congress that he now says falsely downplayed Trump's effort to land a Trump Tower Moscow deal during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Cohen previous year acknowledged sending the emails to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in January 2016, but said he killed the proposal after talking to Peskov's office.

"We told them that the presidential administration isn't involved in construction projects, and if they are interested in making investments we will be glad to see them at St. Petersburg's economic forum", said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the AP.

Michael Cohen leaves Federal court, in NY.

Cohen told Congress that he killed the proposal after talking to Peskov's office, which was a lie.

Michael Cohen is asking a judge to sentence him to time-served in his various cases before the special counsel and federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

"When I heard his plea included information about keeping Donald Trump's kids up to speed, I have to say - we've heard this before - but I was thinking to myself, "lordy, I hope there are tapes" because we don't know what Michael Cohen has been taping but we may hear more about that in the future", he said. The most powerful letter was from his father, Maurice Cohen, 83, a Holocaust survivor, who wrote that his son is "the oxygen in the air that I breathe".
