  • Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 855 Processor for 5G Phones

The two companies are set to unveil a proof of concept, powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules, at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, Hawaii, this week.

In addition to the hardware support in Snapdragon 855, Qualcomm also discussed today worldwide carrier rollout plans for 5G technology in 2019, including commitments from all four major U.S. carriers for both Sub-6 and mmWave networks. Samsung has stepped up to the plate.

In partnership with Verizon and AT&T, at the conference Samsung is showing a 5G device working on a live 5G network, a key proof point, said Justin Denison, SVP of Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

Qualcomm says that this under-display fingerprint sensor is the most secure fingerprint sensor available. Verizon's 5G network now exists in only a small handful of cities.

The rough timing of OnePlus's intended European launch isn't exactly a surprise - Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon pointed out in his day one keynote address that wireless industry as a whole was moving "at the same pace for 2019 launches" for 5G.

T-Mobile is also developing its 5G network with an estimated roll-out of 2020.

On the other side of the border in Mexico, Tijuana police had arrested 39 people by Sunday night, the agency said on Facebook. A migrant mother who was trying to illegally enter the United States while scaling a border fence fell off and was impaled.

Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm, told attendees at the summit that 5G will provide the "foundation for virtually every other electronic device to become connected", and despite the reservations of some that 5G is not yet ready for prime time, the United States chip giant prides itself on "making the impossible, inevitable". The SoC maker also said that the Snapdragon 855 would sport the world's first Computer Vision (CV) ISP which would enable phones to recognise objects and faces, and thus allow phones to sport new video capture features.

At the 2019 Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit this week, a 5G demo unit made by Samsung was shown to partners and press.

In February 2018, 18 manufacturers announced plans to release 5G mobile phones in 2019, so there will be plenty of options for consumers to choose from by the end of the year.

The newly announced Snapdragon 855 also features the worlds first ultrasonic under the display fingerprint sensor solution which Qualcomm calls 3D Sonic Super.

The GPU promises a performance boost of 20% over Qualcomm's current offering, too, while also receiving new features such as support for Vulkan 1.1 support, HDR10+ (a first for mobile), and physically-based rendering, all of which should contribute to more realistic-looking games, according to Qualcomm. "Furthermore, this technology enables sleek, cutting-edge form factors while distinguishing itself from alternatives with higher levels of security and accuracy", it said in its blog post.
